Robert Indiana was born in New Castle, Indiana in 1928.
Indiana studied at the Art Institute of Chicago from 1953 to 1954. In 1954, he attended Edinburg College of Art, Scotland on the George Brown Traveling Fellowship.
Indiana’s work has been presented in numerous exhibitions in the United States and abroad. In 2012, Gary Nader gallery presented the group exhibition Berardo Collection featuring a major work by Indiana from the collection of Joe Berardo. The show curated by Gary Nader was exhibited at Gary Nader Art Center, Wynwood Arts District, Miami during the celebration of Art Basel, Miami Beach 2012.
Robert Indiana’s work is included in various collections around the world, such as Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, NY; Whitney Museum of American Art, New York, NY; Detroit institute of Art, MI; Stedelijk Museum, Schiedam, Holland, among others
Indiana has received many awards and honors, including Honorary Degree of Doctor of fine Arts by University of Indiana, Bloomington, IN (1973); Honorary Doctoral Degree from Colby College, Waterville, ME (1981).
