Mario CarreĆ±o was born in Havana, Cuba on May 24, 1913.
He studied painting at the Academia of San Alejandro in Havana from 1925-1926. In 1938, CarreĆ±o studied art at the San Fernando School in Madrid. He also attended from 1937 to 1939 the AcadĆ©mie Julian in Paris.
CarreĆ±oās work has been widely exhibited and is included in the permanent collections of the Museo de Bellas Artes, Santiago, Chile; Museo Nacional de Bellas Artes, Havana, Cuba; Museum of Modern Art, New York; Carrol Reece Museum, East Tennessee State University, Johnson City, TN and Gary Nader Collection, Miami, FL.
In 2000, Gary Nader gallery held a retrospective of the artistās work Mario CarreĆ±o- One Man Show at Gary Nader fine art in Coral Gables, FL. The show featured selected paintings from 1941 to 1984.
Throughout his life, CarreĆ±o received numerous awards and honors such as the Guggenheim International Award, New York (1956), National Prize of Art of Chile, Santiago de Chile (1982) and the Cintas Foundation Fellowship, New York (1987), among others.
Mario CarreĆ±o died in Santiago, Chile on December 20, 1999
