About the Exhibition

Picasso to Botero brought European modernism and Latin American art into conversation at Gary Nader Art Centre in Miami’s Wynwood Arts District. Taking Pablo Picasso and Fernando Botero as points of departure, the exhibition explored how artists across Latin America transformed international influences into distinct approaches to form, color, identity and perception.

Presented from December 4, 2025, through March 28, 2026, the exhibition coincided with the 40th anniversary of Gary Nader’s first gallery in Miami. It reflected four decades of collecting, research and exhibitions dedicated to placing Latin American art within a broader history of modern and contemporary practice.

Origins and Ruptures

The opening theme examined the European currents that shaped Latin American modernism and the ways artists adapted them to their own contexts. Cubist approaches to volume and structure became starting points for new visual languages: Amelia Peláez’s bold forms, Joaquín Torres-García’s geometric constructivism and Emilio Pettoruti’s rhythmic compositions revealed different paths through that exchange.

The Emergence of a Latin American Voice

Wifredo Lam’s hybrid figures brought Cubism and Surrealism into dialogue with Afro-Caribbean spirituality. Alongside his work, Fernando de Szyszlo’s abstraction, Rufino Tamayo’s use of color and Diego Rivera’s narratives offered distinct responses to cultural memory and identity. Together, these artists showed how regional histories could enter an international artistic conversation without losing their specificity.

Contemporary Consolidation

The final theme followed this legacy into new conceptual and perceptual territories. Carlos Cruz-Diez and Jesús Rafael Soto explored the active role of the viewer through color and movement. Guillermo Kuitca approached memory through mapping and space, while Vik Muñiz reconsidered familiar images through unexpected materials. Works by Fernando Botero and Oswaldo Vigas extended the conversation through their individual approaches to figure, volume and visual language.

Four Decades in Miami

For Gary Nader, the exhibition connected an institutional anniversary with a longstanding curatorial commitment: to present Latin American artists as essential participants in the history of modern art. The installation brought paintings and sculpture together across generations, inviting visitors to trace relationships between works and consider how artistic ideas travel, change and acquire new meanings.
