Light & Matter

About the Exhibition

Light & Matter presents abstract paintings by Rachel Valdés at Gary Nader Art Centre in Miami. The exhibition explores how light and color shape perception, connecting the physical act of seeing with memory, emotion and inner experience.

Valdés draws on optical phenomena such as diffraction and afterimages—the colors and forms that can linger after a light source disappears. Rather than depict light as an object, her paintings evoke its sensory effects through shifting hues, blurred contours and layered color.

The works invite close, unhurried looking. Forms seem to emerge and dissolve, suggesting the changing impressions that arise between what the eye receives and what the mind retains. Through abstraction, Valdés approaches painting as a space where visual sensation and psychological experience meet.
